Egypt’s landscape, dominated today by vast deserts, was very different millions of years ago. In the late Cretaceous period, about 100 million years ago, much of Egypt was a lush environment of rivers, swamps and dense forests. It was part of a region known as Gondwana, a huge landmass that connected what is now Africa, South America, Antarctica and other southern continents. In this humid, tropical world, dinosaurs thrived.

Paleontologists have discovered several dinosaur fossils in Egypt, the most famous of which is Paralititan stromeri . Unearthed in the Bahariya oasis in 2001, Paralititan was one of the largest dinosaurs ever discovered, a massive, herbivorous titanosaur that measured over 80 feet (24 meters) long. The fossils reveal that Egypt was home to some of the largest creatures to ever walk the Earth.

The Bahariya oasis, where many fossils were found, would have been a tropical coastline, teeming with life. As well as giant herbivores such as Paralititan, Egypt also hosted carnivorous dinosaurs such as Carcharodontosaurus , a ferocious predator with serrated teeth designed for cutting through flesh.

These findings suggest that Egypt’s prehistoric environment was very different from the arid deserts we see today. It was a lush, fertile area, similar to today’s rainforests, that was home to a wide variety of plant and animal life.

Fossil finds in Egypt go beyond dinosaurs. The Sahara Desert, which envelops much of Egypt, was once a hotbed of life in ancient times. Evidence of whales, crocodiles and other marine life has been discovered in the region, showing that parts of Egypt were submerged under water at different points in its geological history.

The Wadi Al-Hitan , or “Valley of the Whales,” located west of Cairo, contains fossils of primitive whale species that lived between 37 and 40 million years ago. Although not from the age of the dinosaurs, these fossils offer further evidence of the dramatic changes Egypt has undergone over the centuries, from a prehistoric ocean to a thriving land of dinosaurs and finally to the desert it is today.
