Se considera un fósil viviente debido a sus rasgos físicos primitivos, parecidos a los de una anguila, como su color marrón oscuro, anfistilidad (articulación de la mandíbula) y un cuerpo de 6,6 pies de largo con aletas dorsal, pélvica y anal colocadas hacia el cola.
