Algunos miembros del presente equipo de investigación han estudiado avutardas desde principios de la década de 1980, principalmente en las regiones de Madrid y Castilla y León, España. Recolectaron un total de 623 excrementos de avutardas hembras y machos, incluidos 178 durante la temporada de apareamiento en abril. Bajo un microscopio, contaron la abundancia de restos reconocibles (tejido de tallos, hojas y flores) de 90 especies de plantas que crecen localmente y que se sabe que están en el menú de las avutardas.

Los resultados mostraron que las avutardas comen dos especies con más frecuencia de lo esperado debido a su abundancia: amapolas de maíz, Papaver rhoeas y bugloss de la víbora púrpura, Echium plantagineum .
